Defining the Premier Face—Through a Scout’s Lens

Ever wondered what it’s really like to be a model scout at Premier Models? We’re lifting the curtain and giving you an exclusive look into the fast-paced, intuitive, and often surprising world of model scouting.

From the streets of London to online platforms and international castings, our scouts are always on the lookout for fresh talent. But what exactly are they looking for? What defines that elusive “Premier Face”? And what common myths do scouts wish people would finally drop?

We spoke to a few of our top scouts to find out.

How did you become a scout at Premier Model Management?
"I was aware of Premier for many years as I was previously a new face booker at another agency in London and then started my own mother agency. For me, Premier was and still is the top agency for new British faces and so I had always had it in my mind that if the opportunity arose to work there I’d definitely explore it. That opportunity came when a friend who was then the scout at Premier left to go into casting and I sent Carole an email asking if she’d like to meet. We met, I told her I was a Capricorn and was hired on the spot… just kidding, sort of."

Can you give us a brief overview of what it means to be a scout? How did you get here and what has your journey been like so far?
"I have been a model agent for over 15 years, and have always specialised in New Faces. Therefore scouting has always been an integral part of the job and something that has always come naturally to me.
A scout is someone that travels around seeking the next big star.  You can find us at festivals, gigs, shopping centres and basically anywhere with a crowd (normally trying not to stand out lol).
A scout never switches off, we’re always on the lookout for someone exciting no matter where we are or what time of the day, and I’m always jumping up from the table on a night out to jump on some poor boy or girl walking past."

What does your most successful scout day look like?
"My most successful days have always been at festivals. There are always so many great, unique people to meet, and once you've got a few in a row you almost get this scouting high. The atmosphere is fun, sun is (hopefully) shining, we meet a lot of potential models, it stops feeling like work sometimes. Once you get into that mood, the day always feels more successful."

When you’re out scouting, what makes someone stop you in your tracks?
"I think my eye is quite classic, I’m drawn to symmetry and elegance but a disproportionately strong feature, like a roman nose or protruding ears, would stop me in my tracks and definitely makes a face standout in a crowd."
Premier Scout, Hywel

Are there any myths about scouting you’d like to bust?
"Almost too many to count. But the most common misconception is that we scout people who already 'look' like models. People think we only search for clear skin, good style, amazing hair etc. Our job as scouts is to see the potential, and develop someone into a working model. We want to make you as confident as you can be!"

Do you only scout in person, or also on social media? - and what role does social media play in scouting?
"I predominantly scout in person. There are some great scouts who work well online but I prefer to be in a crowd or walking the streets to spot potential models. Scouting on social has many hurdles; private accounts, no photos on an account, filtered messages etc. It’s hard to get that instant ‘wow’ moment scouting online that I enjoy when scouting in person.

My advice for aspiring models who want to be scouted on social media is to have a public account, perhaps specifically for posting headshots or content that scouts could find and to do your research on whether a scout is likely to be legitimate or not if you are contacted – there are still many scam model agencies and scouts so always be cautious."
Premier Scout, Hywel

How has scouting evolved over the last few years?
"Scouting has definitely evolved over the last few years for the better, and the industry is now a lot more inclusive of body shapes and diversity and has moved away from the stereotypical super model look of the 80s.
Social media also has a massive part to play in scouting nowadays, and is a really good way to find new talent."
