Watch This Face: Xie Chaoyu
5th January 2018
Harper's Bazaar meet the 19-year-old Chinese newcomer.
Every week Bazaar's booking team highlights one name to note, from the industry's best-known faces, to girls who are just starting out. This week we turn our attention to Xie Chaoyu.
Born in Yunnan, China, Chaoyu was discovered on social media and her career took off from the moment Premier Models signed her. Her unique, pixie-like style made a compelling appearance on the catwalk for Prada, Givenchy, Fendi and Christopher Kane, to name a few.
“Xie is an absolute one-off,” says Daniel Robson at Premier Models. “An unbridled bundle of fun and energy. And aside from having one of the most transformative, photogenic faces I have ever seen, it’s her personality that is always going to set her apart. We are so honoured as an agency to have been so involved in launching her and the seemingly never-ending list of her accomplishments, most of which are yet to be seen – so watch this space!”
We talk to Chaoyu about her admiration for other models, music festivals and her love of dim sum.
How and when were you discovered?
"I was scouted months ago in China, Chongqing, the city where my college is located. My booker saw my photos from her friends' moments in WeChat. I am so lucky they loved me and introduced me to Premier Models in London. They have encouraged me to believe in myself."
If you weren't modelling, which career would you pursue and why?
"Attorney, that is my major in my college. Just a little bit different from what I'm doing now. Life is changing, who knows!"
What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?
"Getting into the 'top newcomer' on models.com. The key point is all this happened within weeks. I'm always excited for the next moment, because it’s always even better than before and more things [are] coming!'
How do you spend your free time?
"Cooking – but I'm not that good..."
Do you have any travel tips for those visiting your hometown?
"Yunnan, south-west China. Go there with me, I will show you. It's amazing to see how they cook for their families, the typical dance they do for the festivals, the special instruments there, also to see the sunsets."
What’s your favourite form of exercise?
"I love t'ai chi because of my grandpa. It's a good choice, I promise."
What is your dream shoot?
"Just everything. Whatever the next shoot is, that is the dream."
Name your five essential items you wouldn’t leave the house without?
"Work phone, charger, cash, card and earphones."
If you had to wear only one designer, who would it be?
What kind of advice would you give to new girls to the industry?
"If you ever hear of anyone saying 'no' to you, ignore it. You are the best as you are."
Is there a model’s career that you admire and why?
"I’m learning very quickly that I admire all the girls I’m working with. The big girls deserve it, they are totally different but all equally stunning. All the models I’m meeting have nice personalities and they are so professional."
What is your life motto?
"All fine – no worries."
Let’s talk about favourites. What about…
…activities? "Music festivals."
…food? "Dim sum, spicy pot."
…colour? "Not black, although I’m always wearing it."
